History of OM India
The first Operation Mobilization (OM) team from Europe entered India in 1964. More than 40 years later, Operation Mobilization India has now become a fully indigenous national fellowship of Indian Christians committed to sharing the love of Jesus through word and deed in partnership with the Indian Church. OM India has one of the largest interdenominational networks across the nation.
The work is done in the following ways:
1) Through the Indian Church. OM India partners with Indian churches and Indian Christian organizations in training workers and sharing God’s love. Conferences, combined programs and distribution of Christian literature stir India’s Christians to greater effectiveness.
2) Through Training. Most Indian young people (18-25 years old) join OM India for four years. They learn through “hands-on” experience, including various kinds of field work and the daily experience of living on six-member teams. They also learn through Bible teaching in regular study seminars, personal and group study, and prayer. An eleven-acre site in Hyderabad, Central India, serves as a national base for administration, literature and training.
3) Through Holistic Work and Community Development. OM India’s holistic work is an innovative venture to help the poorest of the poor, found in the slums of India. In partnership with local Indian churches, Indian Christian groups and Indian aid agencies, OM India provides health care, primary education for children, literacy classes for adults, vocational training and other development projects. In addition, OM India focuses a large portion of its work on transforming India’s Dalit community through primary education.
Over a span of 40+ years, thousands of Indian men and women have received training through OM India. Today they can be found in all walks of life. Many have returned to secular employment, while over 20% are in full-time Christian ministry. OM India is known nationwide for their excellent training of young Indian Christians, unity among India’s denominations, and for its stance of solidarity with minority groups across the nation.
